Hi everyone,
I hope everyone will give serious consideration to how you can be present at the State House on Wednesday, May 21, at 3:00 for the Unity Rally for Children Left Behind! This rally can be huge if all of the sponsoring organizations turn out their members, and all of us tell everyone we know who cares about how "education reform" has perverted real education.
The basic position of the rally organizers is that the Board of Education needs to provide the leadership so that schools in every community will:
Insure that all students have the books and other materials they need to succeed
Replace test preparation classes with classes that stimulate intellectual curiosity
Provide art, music, theater, and physical education as part of the regular school day to students in all public schools
Evaluate students' achievement based on multiple forms of assessment, as called for in the Education Reform Act of 1993
Focus on lowering the dropout rate (and for the Board to make this an important element of how schools are evaluated, rather than basing "success" on MCAS scores).
These points are the essence of a "conditional diploma" for the Board of Ed, to be signed by rally participants.
Sponsors include the MTA, AFT MA, CPS BTU, FairTest, and others. This is a broad coalition speaking up for a change from the educational policies of the last decade that have clearly failed many thousands of young people.
Imagine if a rally were called for people who support the way things are going now, with everything focused on raising test scores. It would be a very small gathering. Now, imagine if all of us who know there must be a change in direction come together ... Please see what you can do to spread the word and build the rally to a size that can't be ignored in the State House.
Let me know if you need more information.
