As children step back into classrooms this year, how will they be affected by environmental exposures in school buildings?

Many schools have conditions or practices that can affect indoor air quality in a way that hurts children's health and ability to learn. According to The U.S. General Accounting Office (GAO), "While laws compel children to attend school, some school buildings may be unsafe or even harmful to children's health."

Good solutions exist for many common problems with school environmental health, and even small changes can make a dramatic difference for the children, teachers and staff who spend their days in school buildings:

A Lion in the House

HELPING CHILDREN WITH CANCER & THEIR SIBLINGS
At a time when an estimated 40,000 children return to school after battling a pediatric cancer, a new Web site now makes it possible for students and teachers to welcome these young survivors back to the classroom. Inspired by the critically acclaimed A LION IN THE HOUSE documentary -- www.mylion.org -- provides instant access to information about pediatric cancer and to service-learning projects where classmates can help a peer undergoing cancer treatment. "Cancer is not fair, and childhood cancer is even less so," said MyLion project director Melissa Godoy. "Not everyone can find a cure for cancer, but we can all contribute to finding that cure, or we can make life better for patients and families." To ease the anxieties for classmates returning to school after cancer treatment, MyLion.org offers access to service-learning projects and curricular tools. One project shows students how to sponsor a blood drive to help children in the community undergoing cancer treatment. "A pediatric cancer diagnosis affects everyone in the family," said Melanie Goldish, SuperSibs! Executive Director. "Siblings need to know, especially during the fight against cancer, that they are special and important people, too, and that their classmates and friends are there to support them during this difficult time."

PTA Supports Public School Repair & Renovation Act

Last week, PTA pledged support for the Public School Repair and Renovation Act of 2007, S.1942. The bill, introduced by Senators Tom Harkin of Iowa, Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts, Hillary Clinton of New York and Barbara Mikulski of Maryland
  • Authorizes $1.6 billion in fiscal year 2008 and such sums as necessary in following years for grants for school renovation. States would receive funds in relation to their Title I allocation for that fiscal year with no state educational agency receiving less than 0.5 percent of the amount allocated.
  • Provides funding for states for planning and research purposes to better implement school renovation initiatives.
  • Requires the Government Accountability Office to report on school facility spending and provide the first estimate since 1995 for the costs needed to bring all schools to good overall condition.

In March of this year, PTA joined members of the Rebuilding America's Schools coalition in supporting the America's Better Classroom Act of 2007. The legislation would subsidize $25.2 billion in zero-interest school modernization bonds. Identical legislation was introduced in the Senate in March by Senator John D. Rockefeller of West Virginia.
