Promoting a Summer of PLAY

Advocacy Update: Promoting a Summer of PLAY
http://www.ymca.net/downloads/advocacy_update_promoting_play.pdf

Many Americans know about the obesity epidemic, but few think of simple solutions to address it. Simply put, we need to get America's youth moving more and eating better. Today, key players in the recreation field have recognized that providing engaging, fun and interesting activities through play is one way to get children motivated. Park and recreation professionals know that the benefits of play are endless. Unstructured free  play provides children an opportunity to explore their surroundings while establishing connections with their peers releasing bottled-up energy.

Organized play, like that found through playing ball in the park or learning the rules of the game in physical education class, provides kids with an opportunity to build skills necessary for teamwork and to identify potential leadership traits. About a year ago, NRPA discussed with the YMCA of the USA about how the two organizations could align their strategies to help make America healthier.

YMCA is the largest non-profit provider of youth sports, after-school programming and child care. Collectively, park and recreation departments are the largest public providers of youth sports, after-school activity and child care. Yet, these two entities have often operated with separate policies at the national level and in competing environments on the local level.

ItsWhosOnThe BusThatCounts

ItsWhosOnTheBusThatCounts.org is a non-profit organization comprised of young adults who have demonstrated their creativity and strength of character by, for example, dealing with an important life challenge.

During their tenure, these individuals work together on one project a year that has been selected by majority vote. In addition, each member takes on a uniquely significant personal project, and is encouraged to enlist the help and support of fellow colleagues. It may include working for other non-profit organizations with funding from ItsWhosOnTheBusThatCounts.org .The goal of all efforts is to contribute to the betterment of an individual, a group or a cause.

Founder Isaac Colbert is the recently retired Dean for Graduate Students at MIT and and past president of the AAU Association of Graduate Deans.

The organization's core founding belief is that choosing the staff with care and selectivity is the critical factor in the success of the company.
It's who's on the bus that counts.

Stop School Animal Dissection

Protect Students and School Air Quality
by Stopping School Animal Dissection

Find out about the many good alternatives such as videos, plastic models and computer software. Studies show that students who used alternatives did as well or better than students who dissected animals. Alternatives can be used over and over until the lesson is understood. They are less expensive to buy and are even offered on loan from animal protection groups free of charge.

State Children's Health Insurance Plan

From the League of Women Voters: This summer the Senate and the House passed bills to reauthorize the State Children's Health Insurance Plan (SCHIP), which provides health care coverage to millions of low-income children. This past Friday congressional leaders announced they had come to a bipartisan, bicameral agreement in a conference committee. Votes in both the House and Senate are expected this week so we must take action to encourage Congress to pass SCHIP reauthorization legislation at the $50 billion funding level NOW!

Take action today to help insure America's children!

Over the past ten years, SCHIP has dramatically improved children's access to health care, and has made great strides in covering children. The program covers children from low-income families who do not qualify for Medicaid. As of today, SCHIP is only authorized through September 30, 2007, which is fast approaching. It is the right time to improve and strengthen SCHIP to further increase access to affordable, comprehensive, equitable, and quality health coverage for all of our nation's children. As a direct result of this program the percentage of low-income children in the United States without health coverage has fallen by one-third in the past decade even as employer-based coverage has decreased.

The conference bill will include up to $50 billion over five years to provide health care for about half of America's nine million uninsured children. It is important to continue our nation's great progress in covering more uninsured, low-income children. We hope you will send a message to your Senators and Representatives to encourage them to pass the bill at the $50 billion funding level.

Without SCHIP millions of children whose families cannot afford health care coverage will go uninsured!

TAKE ACTION

1. Contact your Senators and Representatives now , by phone or by email, and urge them to reauthorize SCHIP.

2. Send this alert to other concerned citizens - your grassroots network, your friends and coworkers. Encourage them to contact their Senators and Representatives today!
