Mercury Use in School Classrooms

Northeast Waste Management Officials' Association (NEWMOA) has posted a
report on-line, "Mercury Use in School Classrooms: Summary and
Assessment of Non-Mercury Alternatives." The report was developed to
support efforts in Massachusetts to eliminate use of mercury-added
products in K-12 classrooms.  The Massachusetts Department of
Environmental Protection (Mass DEP) funded this report.  The research is
based on more than six years of experience with cleaning out mercury and
mercury-added products in K-12 schools and buying suitable non-mercury
alternatives for the teachers and schools in MA.

You can find the report at the following:

The information about non-mercury alternatives may also be useful to
other sectors besides schools.

ACT for a SAFER MASSACHUSETTS

Progress on Safer Alternatives
On Monday, November 5, the legislature's Environment Committee approved the Safer Alternatives Bill , the top legislative priority of the Alliance for a Healthy Tomorrow.

The Safer Alternatives Bill builds upon the state's landmark Toxics Use Reduction Act (TURA), passed in 1989, which has successfully encouraged manufacturers to cut back on chemical use. The bill designates "Priority Toxic Chemicals" which are used in Massachusetts and are linked to chronic illnesses. It mandates a careful process to evaluate and then require safer alternatives to these chemicals where feasible, providing assistance to businesses in the transition.

The next stop for the bill is the Senate Ways and Means Committee.  Click here to email your state senator in support of the bill.

School Nutrition Bill Advances!

MPHA has achieved a significant milestone in our effort to get junk food and sugary drinks out of schools. On October 24, the Joint Committee on Health Care Financing reported out H. 4199, "An Act to Promote Proper School Nutrition." Next stop: the House Ways and Means Committee.

Of course, good bills don't move by themselves. In recent months, MPHA has delivered hundreds of postcards to the State House, published over a dozen op-ed pieces and letters to the editor, and added our 91st organizational endorser.

Please help build on our momentum! To email your representative, click here . To endorse the bill, click here . To download our fact sheet and endorser list, click here . For more information, or to get involved, please contact Eric Weltman at MPHA: 617-524-6696, ext. 111; eweltman@mphaweb.org.

MA Public Health Assoc Annual Meeting

Food Policy on the Agenda

France Moore Lappe

Over 300 people attended MPHA' Annual Meeting on October 11, participating in a lively discussion of food policy in Massachusetts. The meeting featured opening remarks by DPH Commissioner John Auerbach, clips of " King Corn" presented by film producer Ian Cheney, a keynote address by author and social entrepreneur France Moore Lappe and a panel of local health officials and activists.  The meeting also included a public health expo which showcased 26 local organizations.

Attendees practiced what they preached, drinking organic fair trade coffee, while filling out postcards in support of the School Nutrition Bill and signing up for MPH's Food and Nutrition Section.  And we were inspired by Lappe's provocative story of meeting a Brazilian woman who organized a program to provide nutritious food to her city's residents. As they spoke the woman began crying; Lappe asked if she was sad because feeding the hungry was so difficult. Her response: She was sad because it was so easy.

For more information, or to get involved in MPHA's Food and Nutrition Section, please contact Terry Mason at MPHA: 617-524-6696, ext. 103; tmason@mphaweb.org.
