Rachel Carson Online Book Club

Rachel Carson is considered by many to be the mother of modern-day ecology. This year, to mark the 100th anniversary of Rachel Carson's birth, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will celebrate the achievements of its most notable employee.

A highlight of the centennial celebration is the Rachel Carson Online Book Club, beginning in March and continuing through November 2007 . The forum will focus on the life and work of Rachel Carson including her role as a female leader in science and government.  Distinguished guest moderators will participate in the online discussions. Author and Carson biographer, Linda Lear will launch the first session on March 1. Read more

For the health of our children...

...Conserving and developing more sustainable systems is not boring or depriving -- it's actually engaging and innately satisfying. Questioning where things come from and how they're made helps us become deeper, holistic thinkers and will have a major impact on our children. If we truly change our ways we will not diminish or "lose" our lifestyle -- we will gain enormously. We'll lead more thoughtful and meaningful lives together. When people reflect on the highlights of a past year, they often mention a time they have slowed down and connected with family or friends, taking notice of something beautiful in nature. We can have lots more of this. Please join me! Tell me what you and your community are doing about global warming. ... PEG WINSHIP , Boston Globe, February 27, 2006

Number One Milk Company Says No to Clones

The nation's biggest milk company, Dean Foods, said Thursday it will refuse milk from cloned cows. The Food and Drug Administration gave preliminary approval to meat and milk from cloned animals and could grant final approval by the end of the year. Federal scientists say there is virtually no difference between clones and conventional cows, pigs or goats.

Rachel #1 of all time (UK)

Earthshakers: the Top 100 Green Campaigners of All Time

The Environment Agency has invited experts to name the people who have done most to save the planet. From the woman who raised the alarm over the profligate use of pesticides to the doctor who discovered that chimney sweeps in 18th century London were dying because of their exposure to soot, the government's Environment Agency has named the scientists, campaigners, writers, economists and naturalists who, in its view, have done the most to save the planet.

To help celebrate its tenth anniversary, a panel of experts listed its 100 greatest eco-heroes of all time. And it does mean all time: St Francis of Assisi (1182-1226) is there, as is Siddartha Gautama Buddha, who died in 483BC.

Top of the list is Rachel Carson, a US scientist whose 1962 book, Silent Spring, is credited by many with kick-starting the modern environmental movement. Her account of the damage caused by the unrestrained industrial use of pesticides provoked controversy and fury in equal measures. Barbara Young, the Environment Agency's chief executive, said: "She started many of us off on the road to environmental protection."
