McPartland premiere's new Silent Spring

McPartland Elected to National Radio Hall Of Fame
With almost seven decades in show business behind jazz ambassador/pianist/educator/radio personality Marian McPartland, an NEA Jazz Master, it's hard to imagine additional milestones left to achieve in such an illustrious and celebrated career. But this November, McPartland will be inducted into the prestigious National Radio Hall of Fame in Chicago on Nov. 3.

On Nov. 15 the 89-year-old legend will premiere a new piece she composed in honor of the influential environmentalist author of "Silent Spring," Rachel Carson. The orchestral piece will be performed by McPartland and the University of South Carolina Symphony Orchestra in Columbia, S.C.,  as part of a special program conducted by Dr. Donald Portnoy.   Long an admirer of Carson's book and a staunch environmentalist herself, McPartland penned the tribute and collaborated with renowned jazz and film pianist/arranger Alan Broadbent, who sculpted the orchestrations around McPartland's piano-based compositions.

Organic lawn care for National Mall

A Capitol Idea
Organic lawn care to be tested on National Mall in D.C.

SafeLawns.org has received permission to use organic gardening techniques on a portion of the National Mall in Washington, D.C., for a two-year trial period. Can environmentally friendly soil treatments such as compost tea hold up under the heavy foot traffic near the U.S. Capitol? One could cut the tension with a spade.

Give leaf blowers the boot

According to a French proverb, a person does not like noise unless he or she is making it. Many landscape contractors and homeowners are making plenty of noise this fall season, chasing leaves with their powerful blowers. Routinely using leaf blowers near unconsenting pedestrians and neighboring homes that may be occupied by home workers, day sleepers, children, the ill or disabled, these noisemakers are pleasing no one but themselves. In the process they are contributing to the considerable effects of noise and air pollution, causing distress to humans, neighborhood wildlife and landscapes, too. It's time to give leaf blowers the boot.  READ MORE

Global Geotourism Initiative

http://www.nationalgeographic.com/travel/sustainable/
To create a global movement encouraging and enabling geotourism, defined as tourism that sustains or enhances the geographical character of a place--its environment, culture, aesthetics, heritage, and the well-being of its residents. With its emphasis on place-based assets and benefits, geotourism can help residents increase employment opportunities with production of indigenous craft, providing local cuisine, offering local guide services, and offering hospitality products that provide unique and valued cultural educational experiences for visitors. With tourism the number one export for many countries and destinations, the geotourism approach directs visitor spending toward those providing services at the local level.

Bill Moyers Journal: Rachel Carson

Bill Moyers Journal: Rachel Carson
(download transcript and watch the video)

Forty-five years after the publication of Rachel Carson's landmark book Silent Spring, which launched the modern environmental movement, her disturbing story of how toxic chemicals were poisoning the earth still resonates. But who was Rachel Carson? And what can the ferocious debate she started and the vicious attacks she endured tell us about environmentalism in the 21st century?

Bill Moyers Journal looks at the life and legacy of Rachel Carson through an extraordinary portrayal of her in a one-woman play performed by veteran stage actress Kaiulani Lee, whose play A Sense of Wonder has been the centerpiece of regional and national conferences on conservation, education, journalism, and the environment for more than ten years. The broadcast combines excerpts from the play, an interview with Lee and documentary reporting on Carson's life and work in a powerful look at this scientist, writer, and seeker of the truth.

Web Exclusive Video: Ms. Lee explains what drew her to Rachel Carson
