Blog: MIT Aeronautical Engineering Society1941 Film

Greetings:

This web site is based around a film titled "MIT AES 1941".

The project, converting a 16 MM film to DVD, all started with
an email from Josh Kneer to GBSC. Josh purchased the Franklin
PS-2 NC454Y and plans to restore it. He contacted GBSC to
learn more of the glider's history as it was once owned by the MIT
Aeronautical Engineering Society.

I contacted Walter Lob, an AES member and glider pilot.
Walter graciously wrote his memoirs based around the AES and flying
the Franklin PS-2. Click on the link to read the memoirs.

For many years I have been the custodian of a 16 MM film
labeled "MIT AES 1941". Being that I had never seen the film,
I decided now was the time to do something with it and convert it
to DVD.

Wow, to my delight, the film is comprised of 3 historical
sections. The first being MIT AES in the early 1950's flying the
Schweizer SGS 2-22 N91833. The next section highlights the
Franklin PS-2 based on a winter encampment starting out at
MIT. The last section, filmed in color is post 1945 and
features lots of gliders, pilots, and bystanders.

Bertha Ryan checked her log book and confirmed that N91833
was indeed the MIT AES 2-22. The glider is currently owned by
Lew Hull.

This web site is made from photos captured from the
film. I hope you all enjoy the pictures and the DVD (once it
is available).

So, what can you do... Select the

 Gallery
tab, and click on a photo. It would be great
to get details on some of the gliders, registration numbers, the
Canadian registered gliders, the places, the people, and even the
cars! Please email me any comments with reference to
the photo name. Email to
iblieden@rcn.com

In will collate the comments and add the photos with
comments as additional material to the DVD.

MIT Soaring Association (MITSA) merged with Greater Boston
Soaring Club (GBSC) in 2002. MITSA, a 501(c)(3) corporation
continues to exist as an educational arm of GBSC, principally to
support the GBSC junior program.

If you want a copy of the DVD, please contact me by email
with your mailing address. The donation is $10.00 plus $5.00 for
shipping within the US.

Please click on the comments below to view excepts from
Bertha Ryan and Lloyd Licher on flying with MIT AES in the
1950's. Their stories and others will be included in the
DVD.

If you have any questions or would like to order a copy of
the DVD, please email me at
iblieden@rcn.com.

Regards,
Ira Blieden
